The Northern Cape MEC for Agriculture Land Reform and Rural Development Mr Norman Shushu launched more than 20 Million rand Super Chicken project in Warrenton as part of commemorating World Food Day. World Food Day was
commemorated under the theme “Agricultural Cooperatives- Key to feeding the world” at Warrenton in the Magareng Local Municipality.
The Day is been commemorated annually on the 16th of October by over 150 countries across the world, to seek ways in improving food security, and to contribute to the eradication of poverty. It is also to highlight efforts by government in eradicating hunger, and malnutrion, through the Integrated Food Security and Nutrition Programme (IFSNP).
MEC Shushu highlighted the importance of cooperative movement in the fight against hunger and poverty. “It is therefore appropriate that we recognize and congratulate the remaining 10 members of this cooperative who have shown resilience and demonstrated their commitment to the course of making a difference not only to their own lives, but to the rest of the community of Warrenton”.
Warrenton Super chicken is a broiler project that is situated on the N12 route and was established in 1991 by a commercial Farmer but later collapsed.
The MEC said both national and provincial government shall spare no effort in ensuring that South Africa particularly Northern Cape becomes hunger free.
The day was used as a platform to encourage various communities to form their own Agricultural Cooperatives. Since the inception of the provincial Integrated Food Security and Nutrition Programmes (IFSNP) in 2004, various projects throughout the province have been unveiled in support of Food insecure communities. The deliverables include the distribution of Irrigations tools, seedlings, food parcels, food schemes at schools and clinics.
The event was made possible by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries, Social Development, Water Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform, Health, Education and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), END
