The Northern Cape Premier, Ms Sylvia Lucas is expected to reflect on strides her government has made in the fight against poverty reduction, hunger and malnutrition at Postmansburg tomorrow.

The Premier is to deliver a keynote address during the World Food Day Commemoration at Postmansburg in the Tsantsabane Municipality - 16 October 2018.

World Food Day is being commemorated annually to highlight efforts by government in eradicating hunger and malnutrition through the Integrated Food Security and Nutrition Programme (IFSNP).

Over 150 countries across the globe will be commemorating the day to highlighted efforts to combat hunger and malnutrition. Issues also expected to be tackled is the effects of drought that is crippling the farming sector, especially emerging farmers.

This year’s commemoration will be celebrated under the theme “Our actions are our future. #A Zero Hunger, World by 2030 is possible”. Recent poverty trends report shows that more than half of South Africans are living in poverty. (Source:Statsa.gov.za)

The Premier will also highlight on mechanisms created for the improvement of food security and contributing to the eradication of hunger and for the need to ensure food and nutritious diets for these efforts – were further given impetus by the Millennium Development Goals Targets 2030.

Since the inception of the Provincial Integrated Food Security and Nutrition Programmes (IFSNP) in 2004, various projects throughout the province have been unveiled in support of food insecure communities. The deliverables include the distribution of irrigation tools, seedlings, food parcels, food schemes at schools and clinics.
