Description
The agro-processing sub-sector is among the sectors identified by the South African government policy imperatives that include National Development Plan (NDP), New Growth Path (NGP), Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP), Agricultural Policy Action Plan (APAP) and the recently developed Agriculture and Agro-Processing Master Plan (AAMP) to boost the ailing economy. Furthemore, this is because of its potential not only to promote economic growth and create jobs owing to strong backward linkage with the primary production and other input suppliers, but also forward linkages related to income generated in agriculture, forestry and fisheries through stimulated demand for domestic processed goods.
The National Policy Framework on the development of small and medium agro-processing enterprises in the Republic of South Africa highlights that there is a great deal of work still to be done to develop agro-processing industry to be more significant, both in terms of economic contribution as well as equity and inclusivity of the previously marginalised enterprises. Taking a cue from this background, the Agro-Processing Support Unit of the Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform offers the following to aspiring small and medium agro-processing related enterprises:

- Awareness creation on agro-processing opportunities and available support services,
- Conduct evaluation with regards to agro-processing related agri-businesses,
- Facilitate support with regards to agro processing related initiatives,
- Conduct viability/feasibility studies with regards to agro-processing related initiatives
- Profiling of agro-processing related projects or businesses
