The Department’s Disaster Management Unit, in partnership with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Northern Cape Provincial Traffic, and the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), conducted a successful veldfire awareness activation earlier today along the N8.
The awareness drive formed part of a collaborative road safety and disaster readiness initiative led by law enforcement officials during an operational roadblock. With veldfire incidents increasing during the dry and windy season, the campaign aimed to educate motorists on prevention measures, safe behaviour, and emergency reporting procedures. Throughout the activation, motorists were engaged and provided with informative material including leaflets, fridge magnets, and license disk stickers, each carrying key messages on how to prevent veldfires and what to do when encountering one. These resources also highlighted the toll-free emergency number, 10177, ensuring that communities know exactly how to report veldfires or request urgent assistance.
The roadblock activation on the N8 marks a continued commitment by the Department and its partners to safeguard Northern Cape communities through proactive disaster risk reduction and interdepartmental cooperation.

MEC Mase Manopole, joined by HOD Zolile Monakali, led the Department’s International Men’s Day commemoration, a day dedicated to honouring the value, integrity, leadership and wellbeing of men in our communities.
The programme began with outreach activities at Elizabeth Conradie Special School and Remogo Disability Centre, where teams conducted tree planting and donated agricultural starter packs and sanitary towels, reaffirming the department’s commitment to service, dignity and community upliftment. The formal programme featured powerful reflections from MEC Manopole, highlighting the importance of men’s mental and physical health, breaking the silence around emotional struggles, and encouraging early health screenings. A strong call to action was made on the fight against Gender-Based Violence, with a reminder that men must lead through accountability, compassion and positive influence in their families, workplaces and communities. One of the key milestones of the day was the re-launch of the DAERL Men’s Forum, a platform aimed at fostering dialogue, support and responsible leadership among men within the Department. The MEC acknowledged the outgoing Chairperson, Dr Letsie, and welcomed the newly elected Chairperson, Mr Mguzulwa.
The day concluded with interactive activities including target shooting, quad biking, and a Potjiekos competition which promoted camaraderie, wellness and team-building among staff. As we mark International Men’s Day, DAERL celebrates the men who lead with purpose, serve with compassion, and contribute to building a safer, healthier and more caring Northern Cape.
