Wetland Day Celebration is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness and celebrating the important role that wetlands play in our environment. The theme for this year is wetlands and human wellbeing. Wetlands are unique ecosystems that are characterized by the presence of water in the short term or long term, making them distinct from other terrestrial or aquatic habitats.

These wetlands act as a natural sponge for our environment by absorbing extra water during heavy rainfall or floods. This prevents flooding in nearby areas and helps maintain the balance of water in ecosystems. Moreover, wetlands maintain water quality by filtering, purifying and trapping of pollutants, sediments, and excessive nutrients from entering other waterbodies. By celebrating Wetland Day, we acknowledge their essential role in providing clean and healthy water for both the environment and human. Furthermore, wetlands serve as habitats for a wide range of plant and animal species. These unique ecosystems are biodiversity hotspots, supporting countless species that depend on wetlands for their survival. Celebrating Wetland Day enables us to recognize and appreciate this rich diversity of life, fostering a sense of responsibility towards their conservation.

Various factors such as using wetlands as dumping sides, over-abstraction and killing wetland plants are some of the contributing factors destroying them in the Northern Cape.

This as the challenges of Wetlands will once again be on the spotlight when the Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform, will be joining the World to celebrate World Wetlands Day on 02 February 2024.

The rains came in handy as it will ease the burden on our farmers who were feeling the scotching heat of drought and veldfires due to lack of rain.

MEDIA STATEMENT : SIX NEWLY QUALIFIED VETERINARIANS JOINS DEPT AS PART OF “CCS” PROGRAMME

Six newly qualified Veterinarians have joined the Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform’s Veterinary Services.

The initiative is part of Government’s Compulsory Community Service (CCS) programme. The CCS programme offers the newly qualified veterinarians the opportunity, to render their much needed services to rural areas and to gain valuable experience and knowledge - under the supervision of the qualified veterinary doctors.

The programme runs for a year and is part of taking veterinary services to the whole province – especially the far flung rural areas. The programme was introduced by government as part of bridging the animal health services gap between the urban and rural communities in the country.

The newly qualified veterinarians will be based in various districts of the province, The Department wishes them well in their endeavors. END
